Root Canals Are Designed to Relieve Pain

Many patients arrive with pain caused by inflammation, infection, or a cracked tooth and assume the procedure will make it worse. Modern root canal treatment is performed with effective local anesthesia and is intended to remove the source of pain while preserving the tooth. Most patients describe sensations similar to other routine dental procedures: pressure, vibration, and movement rather than sharp pain.

• We review your medical history, prior dental experiences, and specific concerns before treatment.

• The tooth and surrounding tissues are numbed with local anesthesia.

• The "Wand" computerized anesthesia system can deliver anesthetic slowly and precisely.

• You remain able to communicate with the team, and breaks can be provided when clinically appropriate.

• Ceiling-mounted televisions and headphones can provide distraction during treatment.

• Nitrous oxide (Laughing Gas) is available for appropriate patients who want additional relaxation.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Feel Like?

Nitrous oxide—often called laughing gas—is inhaled through a small nasal mask. You remain awake, breathe on your own, and can respond to instructions. Many patients feel calmer, lighter, or less focused on the procedure. The effect wears off quickly after the gas is stopped. Nitrous oxide is not oral or IV sedation and is not appropriate for every patient, so medical history and nasal breathing are reviewed first.

What If the Tooth Is Difficult to Numb?

Severely inflamed teeth can sometimes require additional anesthetic techniques. Endodontists routinely manage painful teeth and have specialized training in supplemental anesthesia. Tell us immediately if you feel sharp pain; you do not need to “push through” it.

What Should I Tell the Office Before My Visit?

• Past difficulty becoming numb

• Prior panic attacks or severe dental anxiety

• Current medications and allergies

• Pregnancy or significant medical conditions

• Nasal congestion or inability to breathe comfortably through the nose

• A previous reaction to nitrous oxide or local anesthesia

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be put completely to sleep?

Advanced Endodontics offers local anesthesia and nitrous oxide but does not offer IV sedation. If your needs exceed what can be safely provided in our office, we will discuss appropriate options.

Will I be sore afterward?

Mild tenderness is common for several days and should improve. The amount varies with the condition of the tooth before treatment. Follow your individualized postoperative instructions and call for severe, worsening, or concerning symptoms.
